Toyota Will Get Its Own Performance Series

Lexus has its F-division for high-performance models and now Toyota Motor Corp is following suit with its very own sports car line, which should be unveiled at an event in Japan next month.

Toyota already offers a line of Toyota Racing Development performance models in North America and now they’re targeting the Japan market with what they call a "new sports car series”.

Automotive News suspects that the upcoming 2018 Toyota Supra could be the sub-division’s flagship model, though the two-door coupe isn’t won’t debut until next year, well after the new sports car line is revealed. Perhaps a GT 86 or a small coupe based on the S-FR concept will join the Supra later on.

Since the new series is geared towards those in Japan, the lineup’s global availability is unclear, but even if the lineup doesn’t make its way to North America, there’s still the Gazoo Racing Masters of Nürburgring (GRMN) sub-brand that was launched by Toyota earlier this year. Spearheading the brand is the new Yaris GRMN, a high-performance version of the rally based Yaris subcompact hatchback.

These new divisions and sub-brands are Toyota’s attempts at becoming a manufacturer that is known for producing emotional and aspirational vehicles, moving away from its reputation for reliable utility cars.

But doesn't Toyota already have the Toyota Racing Development? It's their in-house tuning shop for all things Toyota and Lexus. So this seems a bit redundant to me.

They might want to get away from everything that TRD has done so far and what they have always been known for which wasn't as aggressive as what's going to happen. So bringing out a new name makes sense, hence GRMN.

So the new Toyota hierarchy, kind of, is going to be the standard models followed by TRD and sitting at the top is GRMN? I suppose this is a sound move considering how popular performance models are these days and how much people are willing to pay for them.

TRD for all we know could just be an accessories brand but its hard to say right now as we don't know much
but what we do know for sure is that GRMN is being used to a similar extent that AMG and M is, that to me already says a lot.

From the sounds of it, GRMN is more for improving an engine's performance or outright installing a performance unit, whereas TRD sounds more like the branch that deals with spoilers, exhaust systems, etc.

Toyota's new Supra will be sold under the Gazoo Racing sub-brand in 2019, meaning Gazoo could be North America's GRMN and perhaps under that badge will be a Yaris in the future.
